Anonymous said: What is Manifest Destiny?

ladyhistory:

Before Destiny’s Child, there was Manifest Destiny, a sassy band consisting of James K. Polk, Henry Clay, and Beyoncé.

Henry Clay would never.

Once you get this, you have to say five nice things about yourself publicly, then send this to ten of your favorite followers.

  1. I am passionate about the things I like. Maybe that goes without saying, but I spent a lot of time as a teenager thinking it was cool to be apathetic and lukewarm about stuff, and a lot of time feeling embarrassed about the extent of my Star Wars knowledge. And then I realised there’s no shame in being very, very invested in the books I read, the films I watch, the food I eat, and so on. What’s the point, otherwise?
  2. I’m good at remembering people’s names. It’s a little thing, but I teach undergraduates, and I think it helps foster a sense of trust in an environment where the students’ pastoral welfare is often relegated to secondary importance.
  3. I have decent strategies for calming down and chilling out. I get stressed and anxious as much as the next person, but I’m pretty good at just stepping back and rationalising and working out what I can and can’t control, and how to attack a problem (step one is usually: tea).
  4. I’m a fairly proficient amateur pianist. I’m so happy I got past the stage of playing just to pass the next exam, or to sex up my personal statement, and started playing for pleasure (this is one of the strategies described in number 3). Since I stopped having lessons eight years ago my technique’s suffered, but I feel I play with a lot more emotional maturity these days.
  5. My nose is pretty cute.

Thanks for tagging, hepatosaurus! <333 I applaud any meme that encourages people (especially ladies!) to cherish themselves.
